What is Play Therapy?

Play Therapy

Play Therapy is an approach that uses elements of play with the intention of helping children build better attachments. It is a mode of therapy that helps children to explore their feelings, to express themselves and to make sense of their life experiences.

Adults use words to communicate, children may not understand how they feel or have words to explain. Play is their natural medium to learn, communicate and explore their worlds.

HOW DOES PLAY THERAPY WORK?

Play Therapy supports children by helping them to consider and acknowledge their feelings. It helps them to learn that it is OK to feel. They can begin to develop coping mechanisms that enable them to deal with their feelings in a safe and constructive way.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SESSION?

The time spent with the Play Therapist allows the child to be in a relationship that is non-judgmental, non-directive and non-interpretative. During a therapy session the child begins to develop an understanding of their feelings and life experiences. Over time they learn to deal more appropriately with situations in the real world.

The Play Therapy approach is based on well - established theories that children will try to grow towards being happy. A happy child is better able to develop, to build good relationships and to learn.

WHAT DO YOU AIM TO DO?

in2play THERAPY provides a therapeutic service for either children or parents/carers who have experienced or who are experiencing emotional issues/difficulties in their lives, which impact upon their ability to develop and sustain safe and or healthy family relationships.

We recognise the diverse and changing nature of emotional needs and therefore offer various sessions to support and meet the collective and individual needs of the family unit.

WHO DO YOU HELP?

Play Therapy can be an effective intervention for children with a variety of presenting problems:

  • Postnatal depression and pregnancy related difficulties
  • Children or young people who have been abused, neglected or traumatised
  • Those who have experienced loss through bereavement, family breakdown or separation from culture of origin
  • Children who are ill, disabled or cope with carers or siblings with disabilities
  • Those who have experienced domestic abuse or substance misuse
  • Children who have emotional or behavioural difficulties (e.g. depression and/or aggression) arising from their experiences?
  • Those with additional learning needs
